📍 From Drone, Italy
Monte Elmo, known as Helm in German, is a 2,434-metre peak in the Carnic Alps above Sesto, on the border between Italy and Austria. Its two names reflect South Tyrol’s Italian- and German-speaking culture. Unlike the craggy Sesto Dolomites facing it across the valley, Monte Elmo has broad, grassy upper slopes, creating a distinctive contrast between rounded green ridges and pale rock towers. This open terrain gives the Dolomite skyline a prominent place in the view, while ridge paths and alpine pastures define the summer landscape. In winter, ski pistes trace clear lines down the snow-covered mountainside.
