Montaña de Siete Colores, widely known as Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain, rises near Uchullujllo in the high Andes of Peru’s Cusco region, within the broader Ausangate landscape. Its distinctive red, ochre, green, and pale bands come from mineral-rich sedimentary layers exposed by uplift and erosion. The sweeping, treeless slopes make the stripes appear especially graphic against distant peaks, while hikers and grazing alpacas often reveal the mountain’s immense scale. Reaching the viewpoint requires a demanding high-altitude walk above 5,000 meters, and cloud or snow can quickly soften or conceal the colors.
