Mont Saint-Michel is a French island commune located about one kilometer off the country’s northwestern coast in the region of Normandy. It is home to a majestic and iconic medieval abbey, built on the rocky islet, that has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The abbey, dating back to the 8th century and at one time a major pilgrimage site, is perched atop a steep rocky mountain and surrounded by bay waters. The views of the island, castle-like ramparts, and abbey become even more breathtaking at night when the abbey is lit up by spotlights, making it a photographer's dream. Visitors can explore the island, the cathedral, and discover the local heritage, natural sites, and traditional shopfronts of Mont Saint-Michel. During the low tide, it is a great opportunity to take advantage of the full view and its reflection in the mud flats, as well as a closer look at the rich plant and animal life. It’s an amazing sight whether you’re a traveler or photographer.
