Mont Blanc rises above Saint-Gervais-les-Bains as the culminating summit of the Mont Blanc massif, which spans the French–Italian frontier. At about 4,806 metres, it is the highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe, its measured height varying slightly with the summit’s snow and ice. Saint-Gervais is a historic gateway to the mountain: the seasonal Tramway du Mont-Blanc climbs toward Nid d’Aigle, near the start of the demanding Goûter ascent route. From the valley and higher viewpoints, the mountain is distinguished by its broad white dome, glacier-cut slopes and the sharper ridges of neighboring peaks; low-angle light often separates these layers and brings out the scale of the massif.
