Monemvasia Castle
📍 Greece
Monemvasia Castle is a fortified medieval town on a steep-sided rocky islet off the southeastern Peloponnese, connected to the Laconian mainland by a short causeway. Its name derives from the Greek for “single entrance,” reflecting the narrow approach that helped make it defensible. Developed under Byzantine rule and later held by Venetians and Ottomans, Monemvasia preserves layers of that history in its walls, churches, and stone-built houses. The inhabited lower town gathers beneath the cliffs, with vaulted passages, narrow lanes, and terracotta roofs enclosed by seaward ramparts. Above it, the ruined upper town occupies the rock’s broad summit, where the Byzantine Church of Hagia Sophia stands near the cliff edge. The contrast between the massive bare rock, densely packed rooftops, and open sea gives the settlement its distinctive profile; views from above reveal how tightly the town fits between cliff and coastline.
