The Monastery of Uclés is the monumental former headquarters of the Order of Santiago, perched above the village of Uclés in Castilla–La Mancha. Its importance stems from centuries as both a military-religious stronghold and a royal foundation that symbolized Reconquest-era power and later Catholic monarchy patronage. The complex developed between the 16th and 18th centuries, producing a layered ensemble where late Gothic, Plateresque and Herrerian restraint meet exuberant Baroque additions. Architecturally notable elements include a fortified appearance with granite masonry, a grand, austere main façade and portal, a spacious cloister that organizes conventual life, the choir and chapter house, and a church interior rich in altarpieces and funerary monuments of knights of Santiago. The site preserves military-convent spatial sequences—bastion-like walls, service wings and ceremonial spaces—that reflect its dual role. Locally it’s famed as the “Escorial of La Mancha” and anchors unique traditions such as the annual Caballada festival, a historic equestrian pageant tied to Santiago’s cult. Its layered art and institutional history make it a key destination for those interested in military orders, Baroque ecclesiastical art and Spain’s institutional architecture.
