📍 From Outside, Portugal
Batalha Monastery, formally the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, stands at the heart of Batalha in central Portugal. Founded by King João I to commemorate the Portuguese victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, the former Dominican monastery combines Gothic architecture with richly carved Manueline additions. In the Founder’s Chapel, the shared tomb of João I and Philippa of Lancaster anchors a royal burial space that also holds their son, Henry the Navigator, linking the monument to Portugal’s early maritime expansion. Outside, limestone buttresses, pinnacles and intricate window tracery create a sharply textured silhouette. The roofless Unfinished Chapels offer a distinctive contrast: elaborate stonework frames the open sky, while their monumental Manueline portal reveals dense carving at close range. Within the church, tall columns and stained-glass windows shift the visual emphasis from exterior ornament to height, shadow and colored light.
