Monastero di Batalha is an impressive monastery located in the small town of Batalha, Portugal. Built in the 14th century, it has become an iconic symbol of Portugal’s rich history and culture. Its main architectural style is that of the Late Gothic and its main attraction is its main Chapel, the Capela do Fundador (Chapel of the Founder). Inside the chapel, admire the beautiful tomb of King Joao I and the royal monastery, housing a collection of royal Tiles. Going outside the chapel, explore the Long Gallery, which is a cloister flanked by two towers. From this perspective, you can observe the beauty of the Manueline style, gold and white combination, and statues of the Portuguese Royal Family. Don’t forget to also visit the two cloisters located in the monastery’s south and east sides in order to observe its fine friezes and also the tranquil gardens.
