Mittlere Brücke (Middle Bridge) is a historic bridge in Basel, Switzerland, connecting the two sides of the river Rhine. It was built in 1292, making it one of the oldest bridges of its kind in Europe. The bridge is 262 meters long and has five spans, each consisting of two arches. It is situated near the Spalentor, the city gate of Basel, and is a beautiful sight at night with its floodlight. Despite its antiquity, the bridge alone has the capacity to carry up to 5000 people on foot or on wheel in both directions! It also serves as a pedestrian double-leafed lift bridge controlling the river traffic since its renovation in 2004. It is a great spot for scenic views of Basel and for taking pictures of passing boats and the surrounding scenery.
