Misiones Jesuíticas, situated near the town of Trinidad in Paraguay, is a beautiful Unesco World Heritage Site, containing ruins of 17th century Jesuit Reductions which were built by Spanish missionaries. These settlements were made to convert the native population to Catholicism. The ruins of seven missions are spread out across the region, and are testament to the scale of the colonial project. Several of the missions are open to explore, including San Cosme & Damián, San Miguel, and San Ignacio Guazú. Visitors are free to explore these restored churches, and marvel at the historical artifacts within, such as traditional musical instruments, crucifixes and pottery. An interesting spot to visit is the San Ignacio Mini archaeological park, which provides an interactive experience with informative audio-visual displays, and tours of the impressive fort. There are also several walking trails nearby, offering spectacular views over the lush landscape, ranging from valleys to forests.
