Miravet is a small, mountain-top village located in the region of Tarragona, Catalonia in Spain. The village is situated on the banks of the Ebro River at the very eastern end of the Iberian peninsula. Its unique location gives it breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys, as well as the rugged Mediterranean coastline below.
This charming, walled village retains much of its Medieval character, with stone-clad buildings dating back to the 12th century. At its height Miravet was known as an important defensive fortress, due to its strategic position atop a rocky hilltop on both the Ebro and Ter River. Roman remains can still be found here, notably the spectacular castle ruins of the Guéstim Castle, dating from the 12th century. The village's central street retains a timeless charm, with steep, winding steps lined with quaint cottages - many of which now sell local wine, olive oil and handicrafts. The Church of San Francisco, with its impressive bell tower, dominates the roof line. There is also a picturesque Romanesque bridge across the Ebro and two museums dedicated to local crafts and tradition. Miravet is also home to some excellent hiking trails, as well as river activities such as kayaking and canoeing. Make sure to spend some time exploring and visiting the nearby towns and villages, which still retain their traditional atmosphere. Relaxation and serenity are guaranteed.
