📍 Japan
Meiji Jingu is a Shinto shrine in Tokyo’s Shibuya district, set within a large wooded precinct beside Harajuku Station. Established in 1920, it honors Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken, linking this quiet sacred space to the imperial era that reshaped modern Japan. Its forest was created with trees donated from across the country, giving the shrine a deliberately cultivated woodland setting amid the city. Monumental wooden torii gates mark the approaches, where broad gravel paths lead toward restrained timber shrine buildings and an open courtyard. The contrast between dense foliage, pale gravel, dark wood, and copper roofs gives photographs a distinctive sense of depth and scale. Rows of straw-wrapped sake barrels along an approach record offerings from brewers, adding bold calligraphy and patterned surfaces to the otherwise subdued palette.
