Michalská brána, or Michael’s Gate, marks the northern entrance to Bratislava’s historic Old Town and is the only surviving gate from the city’s medieval fortifications. Its medieval base contrasts with the Baroque tower above, crowned by a green copper roof and a statue of the Archangel Michael defeating a dragon. The passage beneath the tower still channels pedestrians into Michalská Street, preserving the relationship between the old defensive gateway and the streets within the former walls. Viewed along Michalská, the pale tower rises above closely spaced historic façades, creating one of the Old Town’s most recognizable street perspectives. Beneath the arch, a circular zero-kilometre marker records distances from Bratislava to cities around the world—a small detail that connects this former city threshold with a much wider geography.
