Messeplatz
📍 From Inside, Switzerland
Messeplatz is a large square in the center of Basel, Switzerland. It is noted for its historical significance and was first used in the 15th century. Notable landmarks in the square include the strong, red "Riesen" (Giant) gate, which dominates the square and was built in 1502, as well as the rosette-filled facade of the Fischmarkt. Messeplatz is also known for its old Bandstand, and the popular displays on the site such as the "Berg- und Modeplatz" (Mountain and Fashion Square). The square is bordered by a variety of old buildings, many of which are traditional Swiss-style and some of which are cafes and restaurants. From the square, visitors can explore many of the city's attractions, including the famous Spalentor and the town hall. Visitors can also experience the amazing views of Blauen, the city’s historic mountain. When in Messeplatz, don’t forget to take a spin around the colorful carousel!
