Mercado do Ver-o-Peso is Belém’s historic waterfront market complex, beside Guajará Bay at the edge of the old city. Its name, meaning “see the weight,” recalls the colonial customs practice of weighing goods arriving by river to assess taxes. The blue-painted iron fish market, recognizable by its four corner turrets, anchors a broader landscape of stalls selling Amazonian fish, tropical fruits, açaí and medicinal herbs. The market connects the city to the produce and traditions of the surrounding river communities; in Pará, açaí is also a staple eaten with savory foods, including fish, rather than simply a sweet dessert. The fish hall’s distinctive silhouette, boats in the adjoining dock and densely arranged produce stalls offer contrasting views of Belém’s architecture and everyday Amazonian trade.
