Melilla la Vieja is the fortified historic core of Melilla, occupying a rocky promontory between the Mediterranean and the modern port. Its walls grew after the Castilian occupation of the city in 1497, developing into four linked defensive enclosures with bastions, gates, cisterns, tunnels, churches, and military buildings. The complex records Melilla’s long role as a strategic frontier between the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. From its elevated ramparts, ochre masonry and angular fortifications contrast sharply with the blue sea, while views toward the harbor reveal how the old stronghold now sits within a dense contemporary city. Narrow passages, vaulted spaces, and successive layers of stonework provide a more intimate counterpoint to the broad coastal panoramas.
