Melchsee is a mountain lake beside the resort of Melchsee-Frutt, within the municipality of Kerns in Switzerland’s canton of Obwalden. At roughly 1,900 metres above sea level, it occupies an Alpine plateau framed by grazing pastures and rugged, rocky summits. The small Melchsee chapel, standing on a promontory beside the water, is a recognizable landmark that gives human scale to the broad lake and mountain backdrop. Green summer shores contrast with pale rock faces and lingering patches of snow, while calm water reflects the surrounding ridgelines. In winter, the frozen, snow-covered lake transforms this pastoral setting into part of Melchsee-Frutt’s winter-sports landscape.
