📍 Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge spans the Drina in Višegrad, eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, linking the town’s riverbanks with one of the region’s defining Ottoman landmarks. Completed in 1577, it was designed by Mimar Sinan and commissioned by Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović, whose origins lay in the surrounding region. Its 11 stone arches create a rhythmic profile across the river, interrupted by the widened central terrace, known as the kapija, traditionally a place for meeting and conversation. The bridge anchors Ivo Andrić’s novel The Bridge on the Drina, which follows the town’s changing communities through centuries of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule. Riverbank views reveal the contrast between pale masonry, green water and wooded valley slopes, while the central terrace gives the long span a distinctive focal point.
