📍 New Zealand
Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill is a volcanic cone rising above Cornwall Park on Auckland’s central isthmus. Its slopes preserve terraces and storage pits from a major Māori pā, reflecting the scale and sophistication of pre-European settlement on the maunga. At the summit, an obelisk dedicated to Māori stands beside the grave of Sir John Logan Campbell, who gifted land here for public use. The elevated outlook takes in the city, surrounding volcanic cones, and both the Waitematā and Manukau harbours, while stone walls, grazing sheep, and the cone’s sculpted earthworks define the foreground. A grove of young native tōtara and pōhutukawa near the summit continues the site’s long association with a solitary landmark tree.
