📍 Switzerland
The Matterhorn rises on the Swiss–Italian border above Zermatt, its sharply ridged pyramid defining the village skyline. Its first ascent in 1865 ended with four climbers dying in a fall on the descent, an event that remains central to the history of Alpine mountaineering. From Zermatt, dark rock and streaks of snow give the peak its familiar silhouette; higher on the slopes above the village, the small lake Riffelsee can reflect it when the water is still.
