Matsue Castle, also known as Chidori Castle, is a medieval Japanese castle in the city of Matsue, Shimane prefecture, Japan. It was built in 1611 and remains one of the few original castles in Japan. The castle was the home of the powerful Matsudaira family, who were powerful warriors during the Edo period. The three-story main keep stands at 36 meters tall and is the symbol of Matsue. The exterior of the castle is covered in thick earthen walls and its interior contains a complex network of small passageways. The grounds are also home to a large garden and pond, as well as salmon-viewing spots and cherry blossom trees. Visitors are encouraged to explore the various rooms and narrow passageways and gain insights into what life was like during the Edo Period.
