Markus Tower

Markus Tower is part of the late-medieval defensive city walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. As one of the most complete wall systems in Europe, the walls offer a great insight into the turbulent history of this small town over the centuries. The most prominent feature of the walls is the imposing Markus Tower, famously painted by the artist Carl Spitzweg in the 1850s. Used originally as a guard post, it now houses the original city archive and a collections of fine art. The great walls are open to the public for a small fee and offer a great view of the city and even further of its enchanting landscape.
