Marktplatz forms the historic heart of Nördlingen, framed by the town hall, colorful gabled houses and the late-Gothic St. George’s Church. Its bell tower, known as Daniel, rises above the square and anchors views throughout the old town; from the tower, the circular street plan and complete medieval walls reveal Nördlingen’s position inside a meteorite-impact crater. The church itself was built largely from local suevite, rock created by that impact, giving its masonry an unusual geological connection to the landscape. At street level, cobbles, stepped gables and warm stone façades create layered compositions, while Daniel’s height provides a strong contrast to the intimate scale of the surrounding buildings.
