📍 Germany
The Marktkirche zum Heiligen Geist stands beside the market square in Clausthal, the mining-town half of Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the Upper Harz. Built in the 17th century during the Thirty Years’ War, it is widely recognized as Germany’s largest wooden church, its generous hall and galleries reflecting the size and importance of the historic mining community. Blue-painted timber cladding, crisp white window frames, a dark roof and the prominent bell tower give the building an unusually graphic appearance. Wide views from the square emphasize its long horizontal mass, while winter snow intensifies the contrast between the blue walls and surrounding Harz townscape.
