Markt Brugge is a market square located in the heart of Brugge, Belgium. Dominated by Belfry of Bruges and the Provincial Court Building, it has been the social and commercial hub of the city since its inception in the 11th century. Residents and visitors to the city find the square buzzing with life in the form of cafes, chocolate boutiques, craftsman shops and daily markets sailing up and down the lanes. The statues of Jan Breydel and Pieter De Coninck representing Belgium culture are definitely worth seeing. The Provincial Palace, an 18th-century building, is also located on the square. It holds various exhibitions, cultural presentations, theatre productions and other events. The square is also dotted with picturesque buildings like St. Salvator’s Cathedral, Maison Van de Poortere and Maison Claeys-Van Goethijns. The Bear Fountain seems to be the favored spot to gather before venturing out. Visiting Markt Brugge is like travelling back in time and reliving the old days.
