Mariensäule
📍 Germany
Mariensäule is a late Baroque pillar located in the center of Trier in Germany, just opposite the Cathedral of St. Peter. It is topped by a large statue of the Virgin Mary and contains two further statues from sculptors from the Bohemian school. It was built in 1682 and erected by Elector Lothar von Metternich in honor of the city's successful resistance against Louis XIV of France. The Mariensäule itself is 14 meters high, the statue is three meters high. To the left of Mariensäule is the so-called "schiefe Turm" (Skewed Tower), a Medieval tower that has become an integral part of the city's skyline and was also used for astronomical observations in the early 19th century. Mariensäule offers great views over Trier and of the famed Cathedral of St. Peter.
