Marienplatz is the central square of Munich, Germany and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city. Located in the heart of the old city, the area contains a number of buildings and monuments of historical significance. Among the highlights are the New Town Hall with its famous Glockenspiel, the Marian Column and the Old Town Hall. The square is popular among visitors for its lively atmosphere, with a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs; from April to October an open-air market is held at its southern end. It's also an ideal spot for people-watching, with plenty of places to sit and relax. Other highlights in the vicinity include the Frauenkirche church and the Marstallmuseum.
