The Marian Plague Column (Mariánský morový sloup) in Moravská Ostrava a Přívoz is a unique Czech historical monument located in the center of the city, at the intersection of both Ostrava's city parts. It was built in 1728, as a sign of gratitude to Mary the Virgin, after an epidemic of the Black Plague. It is square shaped, with a pyramid of six steps, crowned with a statue of the Virgin Mary atop. Inside is a Baroque statue of the Virgin with a blessed cross in her hands. Around the column are beautiful sculptures of four angels and canopies of saints. The column is framed with a square of ribbed pillars and is a tribute to the beauty of Baroque architecture. It is an important symbol of the city and a must-see for history and architecture lovers visiting the area.
