Manhattan is the New York City borough centered on Manhattan Island, west of Queens across the East River. Its dense skyline reflects the island’s role as a center of finance, commerce, and culture, with Midtown’s Empire State and Chrysler buildings distinct from the cluster around One World Trade Center farther south. Most of the island follows a street grid, while Lower Manhattan retains older, irregular streets and Central Park creates a broad green interruption in the urban fabric.
