Manglares de Ukupseni are the mangrove wetlands surrounding Ukupseni, a Guna community in Panama’s Caribbean comarca of Guna Yala, also known as Playón Chico. The forest marks the meeting of sheltered coastal water and land, with dense green canopies, exposed roots and narrow channels that contrast with the nearby open sea and settled islands. Mangroves provide habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife while helping stabilize this low-lying shoreline. From the water, the most distinctive images come from reflections beneath the foliage, the repeating patterns of tangled roots and the scale of small boats against the dense forest edge.
