Manchester Museum is the principal public museum of the University of Manchester, housing one of the UK’s most significant university collections of natural history, archaeology and anthropology. It’s best known for an extensive Ancient Egypt collection (including mummies and burial goods), large archaeological and ethnographic holdings from Africa, Asia and the Americas, substantial mineral and fossil cabinets and striking taxidermy and skeleton displays that illustrate evolution and biodiversity. The museum began as a Victorian-era university collection, developed for both teaching and public display, and its historic stone façade sits alongside contemporary gallery interventions that improve display and accessibility. Architecturally, the building combines 19th-century museum formality with modernized exhibition spaces, allowing large objects and immersive reconstructions to be shown effectively. Unique features include a vivarium of live specimens, dedicated object-handling sessions and rotating special exhibitions that draw on the research collections; the museum also engages in active provenance research and community-focused projects, making it both a public gallery and a working research institution.
