📍 United States
Manawainui Gulch is a steep-sided ravine on the southern flank of Haleakalā, beside Piʻilani Highway on Maui’s rugged south coast. It lies along the island’s back-road route to Hāna, where dry, open slopes contrast with the rainforest scenery farther east. Erosion has carved deeply into the volcanic terrain, and the highway bridge provides a human-scale reference against the gulch’s large landforms. Tawny grasses, exposed rock, and the blue Pacific define the coastal scene, revealing the abrupt descent from the mountain’s slopes to the ocean.
