Mānana Island Seabird Sanctuary
📍 From Drone, United States
Mānana Island, better known as Rabbit Island, is an uninhabited volcanic tuff islet off Makapuʻu on Oʻahu’s southeastern coast, within the City and County of Honolulu. Its nickname reflects both its rabbit-like outline and the introduced rabbits that once lived here, later removed to protect seabird habitat. As a state seabird sanctuary, it supports nesting birds including wedge-tailed shearwaters and sooty terns. Seen from Makapuʻu’s mainland lookouts, the island’s pale, weathered slopes contrast with the blue ocean and the lower, darker form of nearby Kāohikaipu, creating a recognizable offshore pairing. Landing on Mānana is prohibited without a permit; views from the coast reveal its distinctive profile without disturbing the nesting colonies.
