Malmesbury Abbey, located in Wiltshire, United Kingdom, is one of the oldest abbey churches in England, founded over 1100 years ago in 675 AD. Begun as a simple Benedictine abbey, it later became part of the Augustinian Order in 1217. The present structure of the abbey is nearly 900 years old and consists of the 12th- and 13th-century Norman church, distinctive lancet windows and transepts, and the 15th-century tower. Visitors to the abbey can take a self-guided tour, paying a nominal fee. Highlights of the tour include the 14th-century ruins of the nuns' choir, the 15th-century chapter house, the breathtaking view from the Abbey Tower, the remains of seven Saxon heads in the abbey church, and the medieval wall paintings in the nave and chancel. Malmesbury Abbey also hosts a number of concerts and other events throughout the year, so be sure to check the calendar when planning your visit.
