📍 From Marktplatz, Germany
Mainz Cathedral, dedicated to St Martin, rises beside the market square at the heart of Mainz’s old town. Founded under Archbishop Willigis in the late 10th century, it became a powerful symbol of the city’s role as an ecclesiastical and political center of the Holy Roman Empire. The building is predominantly Romanesque, with later Gothic and Baroque elements reflecting centuries of fires, rebuilding, and alteration. Its distinctive double-choir plan, clustered towers, massive walls, and warm red sandstone create a fortress-like silhouette above the surrounding streets. Inside, the subdued nave, bishops’ tomb monuments, chapels, and adjoining cloister offer quieter studies in stone carving, symmetry, and layered architectural history. From the market square, the cathedral’s scale is especially striking against the colorful façades and regular market activity.
