📍 India
The Shore Temple stands beside the Bay of Bengal in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, a town that was an important port of the Pallava kingdom. Built in the early eighth century under the Pallava ruler Narasimhavarman II, it is a stone-built temple complex, distinct from the town’s celebrated rock-cut caves and monolithic monuments. Two shrines dedicated to Shiva flank a shrine containing a reclining Vishnu, bringing both major Hindu traditions into the same compact ensemble. Its stepped, pyramidal towers form a recognizable silhouette against the sea, while rows of seated Nandi bulls line the enclosure. Salt-laden coastal weather has softened the granite carvings, making the contrast between crisp architectural outlines and worn stone surfaces especially striking. The temple is part of the UNESCO-listed Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram.
