Macquarie Watchtower
📍 Australia
Macquarie Watchtower is a historical structure located in La Perouse, Australia. The tower was built in 1818, as one of the first defensive structures in the area (then known as Botany Bay). The tower is made of sandstone, and is 11.6m tall. In the 1930s, the tower began to deteriorate, however local volunteers worked together to restore the site, and it is now a popular tourist destination. From the top of the tower, visitors can see the surrounding area, including the nearby La Perouse Bay. The area is also home to Australia’s only Submarine Institute, where visitors can check out a submarine and military memorabilia. Nearby attractions include Bare Island Fort, A stone fish trap, and other historical sites.
