📍 Peru
Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba River, near Aguas Calientes in Peru’s Cusco region. Its agricultural terraces, stairways, residences and ceremonial buildings show how Inca builders shaped a steep Andean landscape, combining engineering with finely fitted granite masonry. The Temple of the Sun, distinguished by its curved stone wall, contrasts with the largely rectangular buildings around it. From the upper terraces, the settlement unfolds beneath the steep peak of Huayna Picchu, forming the site’s most recognizable composition. Roofless rooms reveal the layout of the stone-built complex, while forested slopes and the deep river valley convey its dramatic scale. Shifting mountain cloud can soften the surrounding peaks or briefly conceal them, changing the relationship between the architecture and its setting.
