Machu Picchu is an iconic site in Peru and one of the most visited tourist attractions in South America. Located in the highlands of the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of almost 8,000 feet, it was built by the Incan Empire around 1450 and is believed to have served as a royal estate to the original Incan people. It is well-known for its terraced agricultural fields and winding stone staircases, which are thought to be part of an ancient religious pilgrimage route.

Aguas Calientes is the closest village to Machu Picchu, and the only place accessible by train. It is often referred to as Machu Picchu Town, and is well-known for its hot springs and nearby hiking trails. The town itself has a vibrant nightlife and several local attractions, including the Museum of Machu Picchu and the Temple of the Moon. The nearby Top Machu Picchu Mountain is a challenging hike, taking anywhere between 2-4 hours. However, the spectacular views from the summit make it worth the effort. Along the way, you'll pass ancient Incan sites, native flora and fauna, and stunning natural landscapes. From the summit, you can look out over Machu Picchu as well as far into the surrounding valleys.
