Macau is a compact city and Special Administrative Region on the Pearl River estuary, bordering Zhuhai in southern China. Its streets record centuries of exchange between Chinese and Portuguese communities: temples, tiled pavements, pastel civic buildings and Catholic churches stand amid dense residential blocks and contemporary casino towers. The historic core on the Macau Peninsula includes the wave-patterned paving of Senado Square and the stone façade of the Ruins of St. Paul’s, while Taipa and Coloane preserve narrower lanes and village-scale architecture.
