The Temple of Edfu stands on the west bank of the Nile in Edfu, Upper Egypt, between Luxor and Aswan. Built during the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BCE, it was dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god, and is among Egypt’s best-preserved ancient temples. Its monumental entrance pylon bears deeply carved scenes of royal power, opening into a broad courtyard, columned halls, and a sanctuary arranged along a strong central axis. Extensive inscriptions preserve important accounts of temple ritual and the mythic conflict between Horus and Seth. Photographs often emphasize the scale of the pylon, the repeating capitals and shadowed columns, the dense relief textures, and the dark granite statue of Horus guarding the courtyard.
