📍 Egypt
The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut rises at Deir el-Bahari in Al Qurna, on Luxor’s west bank, directly against the Theban cliffs. Built in the 15th century BCE for the female pharaoh Hatshepsut, the temple—known in antiquity as Djeser-Djeseru—is distinguished by three broad terraces linked by central ramps and lined with colonnades. Its surviving reliefs include scenes of Hatshepsut’s divine birth and the celebrated expedition to Punt, offering rare detail on royal ideology and ancient trade. The pale limestone architecture, strong symmetry, and sheer cliffs create the site’s recognizable monumental composition; angled sunlight deepens the repeating shadows between the columns and brings out traces of carved and painted decoration.
