The Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut stands at Deir el-Bahari in Al Qarna, on Luxor’s west bank opposite ancient Thebes. Built for the 18th-Dynasty pharaoh, the complex is arranged as three broad terraces linked by central ramps and framed by long colonnades. Its strong horizontal geometry contrasts dramatically with the sheer limestone cliffs rising behind it, creating one of Egypt’s most recognizable temple façades. Surviving reliefs include scenes of Hatshepsut’s divine birth and her trading expedition to Punt, offering insight into how she presented her reign and royal legitimacy. The east-facing stonework is especially expressive in low morning light, when columns, ramps, and cliff textures gain depth and warm color.
