📍 From Courtyard, Egypt
Luxor Temple stands on the east bank of the Nile in the heart of modern Luxor, within ancient Thebes. Built chiefly under Amenhotep III and expanded by Ramesses II, it was closely associated with royal renewal and the Opet Festival, when sacred processions linked it with Karnak along the Avenue of Sphinxes. Its monumental entrance is framed by seated royal statues and a single granite obelisk; its matching partner now stands in Paris. Beyond the pylons, colonnades, courts, reliefs and reused structures reveal centuries of Egyptian, Roman, Christian and Islamic history, including the still-active Mosque of Abu Haggag above the ancient fabric. Warm evening illumination accentuates the sandstone carvings, vast columns and layered skyline, while the temple’s location amid the living city makes its continuity especially visible.
