Lungernersee is an Alpine lake beside the village of Lungern in the canton of Obwalden, on the route between the Brünig Pass and central Switzerland. Its shoreline records an unusual history of engineering: the lake was substantially lowered through a drainage tunnel in the 19th century to create farmland, then partly raised in the 20th century for hydroelectric use. From elevated roads and paths, the recognizable scene combines blue-green water, curved fields, clustered village roofs and steep forested slopes, with the railway tracing the lakeside. Changing reservoir levels can alter the exposed shoreline, while calm conditions bring clear reflections of the surrounding mountains.
