Ljubljana Castle towers over the city of Ljubljana on the castle hill. It is a medieval fortress whose foundations were laid in the 11th century. Over the centuries, it has been home to many noble families, including, most recently, the Habsburgs and the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The castle towers, castle walls, and dungeon are open to the public, and are full of historical artifacts, including artifacts from World War II. There is a one-hour guided tour within the castle, as well as a café, art gallery, and a puppet theatre. The views from the castle, of the city and surrounding mountains are stunning, and it is possible to take a cable car up to the castle or walk the path. A visit to Ljubljana Castle is a must for any visitor to the city!
