📍 United Kingdom
Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, formally the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, is the Roman Catholic cathedral at the northern end of Hope Street, facing toward Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral at the opposite end. Designed by Frederick Gibberd and completed in 1967, it replaced a far grander, unfinished scheme by Edwin Lutyens, whose crypt survives beneath the site. The modern building is defined by a circular plan, sloping buttresses and a crown-like stained-glass lantern, giving it a profile unlike a conventional Gothic church. Inside, the altar stands at the center, surrounded by concentric seating, while colored light from the lantern emphasizes the strong radial symmetry and textured concrete. As an active place of worship, the interior should be photographed quietly and with respect during services.
