The Lincoln Memorial is a national monument located in the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It is dedicated to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Built in 1922, the memorial features a large marble statue of a seated Lincoln, surrounded by a large chamber which pays tribute to his role in preserving the Union. Upon entering the chamber is a inscription of the Gettysburg Address, and surrounding the monument are 36 columns, one for each of the states of the Union at the time of his death. Within the chamber you can find two murals depicting the history of the Civil War. Visitors to the monument can also take in views of the Washington Monument and Reflecting Pool. The adjacent area is a popular spot for joggers, picnickers and sightseers.
