๐ United States
The Library of Congress sits on Capitol Hill, just east of the U.S. Capitol. Its best-known building, the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 and gives a library founded to serve Congress the grandeur of a civic monument. In the Great Hall, marble staircases, mosaics, and sculpted figures surround a soaring space devoted to learning and the arts. The circular Main Reading Room offers a different sense of scale, with concentric desks beneath a high dome. Those richly layered interiors make the building as distinctive in photographs as the vast collection of books, maps, music, and photographs it houses.
