📍 Spain
León Dormido, the “Sleeping Lion,” is the distinctive mountain profile above Lapoblación, a village in western Navarre near the border with Álava. Part of the Sierra de Cantabria, its limestone heights form the outline of a reclining lion when viewed from the south, across the Ebro valley. The Peña de Lapoblación makes the raised head recognizable, while the ridge stretches westward like the animal’s body. Wooded slopes beneath the crags contrast with the vineyards and farmland of the Rioja landscape below. The name is best understood in a broad landscape view, where the whole silhouette remains visible rather than disappearing into individual rock faces.
